VERN YOUNG

Vern Young

Since 1989, Vern Young has been a resident of Lamar, Missouri. It was after his retirement and move to Missouri from Salt Lake City, Utah that Vern started back into country/bluegrass music which he has always loved. He began booking bluegrass festivals, fairs and concerts throughout the midwestern, southern, northern and eastern states.

Some of the awards and recognitions bestowed upon Vern include being nominated each year since 1990 for "Traditional Male Singer of the Year" by the Midwest Society for Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) music fans. He has won that honor nine times, with the most recent being in 2006.

On SPBGMA's national level, in Nashville,Tenn., he was nominated for the years 2000, 2001 and again in 2002. It was a great honor for Vern's Band to be named Favorite Band of the Year by the Red River Valley Bluegrass Club in Paris, Texas in 2006.

Vern was inducted into "America's Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame" on September 1, 2002 in the state of Iowa. On October 29, 2006, Vern was inducted into the "New York State Country Music Hall of Honor" in Cortland, New York.

Vern spent his early years in Palmyra, N.Y. where he began playing for round and square dances at the local Grange dance when he was 15 years old. He says "that changed my whole life", as he had been a shy teenager up until that time.

During the 40's and early fifties Vern was doing live radio shows and touring with his late wife, Anne as the duet of "Vern Young and Annie". Previous to their move to Nashville, Tenn. they owned a record shop in Rochester, had a country music park along with their music career.

In 1951 Vern joined Bill Monroe's group for a short stint. Later that year he became a regular guest on Max Raney's TV Show on WHAM in Rochester, N.Y. and on Sparkey Gillen's weekly radio show in Rochester. Vern also hosted his own daily radio show broadcasting country music on WSAY.

Vern's love of country music led him to become an award winning radio announcer at KSOP, in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Vern became disenchanted with the modern format of country music. He left KSOP and upon graduation from the Utah Highway Highway Patrol Academy, Vern became a deputy sheriff in Tooele County Utah. Later, he was a marshall in Granby, Colo. and was a deputy sheriff in Virginia City, Nev. He then took a job with the Federal Government and worked in security and as a aircraft firefighter at Hill Air Force Base bombing range on the Great Salt Lake Desert.

Upon his retirement he was invited to entertain at a bluegrass concert at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake. The response he received from this event convinced Vern it was time to perform professionally once again. Now country/bluegrass lovers are lucky he graces the stage with his beautiful, clear baritone voice.

The lady that adds beauty to Vern's show is his bass player. Charlotte Mayall hails from Granbury, Texas. She blends in harmony beautifully with Vern's pure baritone voice. Charlotte also performs a traditional selection of songs solo during their performances. She too has an excellent CD project,"If My Heart Had Windows" for her many fans.

Charlotte Mayall has been playing bass and singing with the Vern Young Band for the past 10 years. Vern Young would tell you quickly he does not play bluegrass. He prefers the old songs performed the way it was done in the 1940s and 1950s. Charlotte continues that trend on If My Heart Had Windows.

Doing the honors of playing Dobro for Vern is Jack Ferguson. Jack also does some very heartfelt lead singing. Jack has been voted "Dobro Player of the Year" a number of times by fans of the Midwest Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America. Jack and his wife, Darlene, reside in Boone, Iowa.

On their schedule we're sure you will find them at a venue near you. This is a traditional presentation of music you must not miss!

Dew, Texas 2002. Charlotte's beautiful clear voice is a perfect compliment of harmony while backing up Vern. She also plays bass for their shows.
